| Dana Gould: I'm Dana Gould, this is Jon Stewart. We're at the US Comedy Arts Festival. Now, Jon, you've got a great gig. Jon Stewart:Yeah. Gould:You're introducing the George Carlin Retrospective. Stewart:Yes. George had to do ten hours of stand-up comedy to get his retrospective, and I have to do a three-minute intro. Gould: [Laughs.] Well, that must have been gold. I mean, he's a hero of mine, a hero of yours. Stewart: Absolutely. Gould:What was it like meeting him? Stewart: It wasn't what I expected. You know, for someone whose mind is that fertile, you'd imagine there's a lot of anxiety that goes along with it. But he couldn't have been kinder, nicer, more grounded. Gould: Yeah. Stewart: It was a pleasure to meet him and talk to him. Gould: It's always disillusioning when you meet your idols and they're NOT insane. Stewart:Right. Gould:Because you assume to be that brilliant, that he's got to be nuts. Stewart:Right. You expect everybody, you know, to be Hunter Thompson. That you'd meet him and he'd be like: "Excuse me a second--THE BIRDS!" You know, and then he'd open up the trunk, and two midgets get out with a big bag of white stuff, you know. Gould: Yeah. Stewart:And he was just sitting there, you know, behind his desk and just kind of typing. Gould:So where'd you meet him? In his office? Stewart: Yeah, I went up to his office in Los Angeles and just drove around. And it was--like, it's in a mall. You know, you're just, "Well, you can park down in the lower lodge and, you know, just come on up the elevator, we're down the hall." Gould: Oh, that's hilarious. Stewart: Yeah, stop in for a quick Orange Julius and go to his office.
But it was great. |
