| Comedian Dana Gould has always been one of our favorite performers, long before he became the voice of Gex and foil to Fred Savage on the NBC sitcom "Working." Dana's three HBO comedy specials (there's a fourth on the way, and a new CD, "Funhouse," is due out at the end of March) set him apart from most of the comedy pack, showing him to be a true originator and a comic genius. You can also see Dana in a couple of upcoming movies, including "Dill Scallions" and "I Woke Up Early TheDay I Died," as well as in the TV remake of the Disney classic "The Love Bug." To plug the release of Gex: Enter the Gecko, Dana called us one recent morning from his L.A. home at the ungodly (for comedy, anyway) hour of 8:30 a.m. We've interviewed a ton of people over the years, but we've got to say that this was the most fun we've ever had working. You'll notice that in several places, we've placed the words "laughter" or "laughs" in parentheses to denote, well, laughter. Those were the big laughs. In fact, we gave up trying to note it after the first few paragraphs. But just imagine that there's laughter after almost anything that anybody said -- whether it's noted or not -- and you'll have a pretty good understanding how this thing unfolded. Here's what happened: Bitstorm: 8:30 in the morning, huh? That's a hard time of day for comedy. Dana Gould: I'm on a sitcom now, so I'm up at this hour usually. Bitstorm: I guess (the show) has changed your working schedule some. Gould: Oh, it's completely revamped it. I'm like a regular person now. Bitstorm: From going to work at 10 p.m... Gould: From waking up 12 hours before you have to be at work... Bitstorm: First of all, let me say that this is a truly a privilege -- your standup stuff is brilliant and I've been a fan for years. Gould: Thank you very much. My CD comes out at the end of the month... Bitstorm: Wait a minute! I'm gonna give you a chance to plug! (Laughter) Gould: I was saying that for your edification, man. Bitstorm: OK, let's jump straight to the plug. Gould: You're a fan, I thought you'd want the CD. Geeeee... Bitstorm: You're doing "Working," the NBC sitcom, Wednesdays at 8 p.m.... Gould: It's 9:30 Eastern Standard, 9:30 Western, I think... Bitstorm: Why don't we just say it comes on Wednesday nights... Gould: ...after "Third Rock"... Bitstorm: ...and turn your damn television on to watch the show. You're not doing anything anyway, just sit there and wait. (Laughter) Gould: You're watching TV to begin with. (Laughter) Bitstorm: You've got the sitcom, the CD's coming out, you've had a couple of movie roles here lately -- things seem to be going well for you. Gould: Things are going great. I just got another role, in the new Michael Keaton film. I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Bitstorm: Plus you got this lizard gig going on. Gould: I got the lizard gig. Bitstorm: Now this is actually the second time around for you as Gex... Gould: My first sequel.
